Innovate & PREVENT contests

Innovate & PREVENT contests

With Innovate & PREVENT, the PREVENT Waste Alliance has launched its first innovation programme to support PREVENT members and other organisations in advancing the circular economy by developing innovative solutions for waste prevention.

The programme consists of three different contests which focus on the topics Behaviour-Centred Design Strategies for Waste Prevention, Prevention of E-Waste, and Prevention of Plastic Waste. All contests are funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

Changing behaviour is critical to tackling pollution challenges. The BE.Innovative programme helps members of the PREVENT Waste Alliance to leverage insights from behavioural science and design thinking to design more effective approaches to waste prevention and circular economy. The application deadline was 30 January 2022.

The selected finalists will be working in a compressed timeline between February and July 2022 to design and pilot their behavioral solutions. They will attend in-depth capacity building workshops and will each receive funding of $5,000 to refine their innovations and prepare to test a prototype. Two finalists will additionally have the chance to receive $25,000 financial support to further implement their behaviour-centred approach.

The RRR Accelerator

E-waste makes up an increasing proportion of municipal waste and leads to a growing amount of toxic substances in local waste streams. The RRR Accelerator offers private companies and NGOs the opportunity to tackle the e-waste challenge by advancing the repair, refurbishment and reuse (RRR) of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) in low- and middle-income countries.

Selected participants will get access to funding between €10,000 and €20,000 as well as tailored non-financial support. The application deadline was 21 February 2022.

The SUP Challenge

Reducing the climate impact of single-use plastic (SUP) starts with changing the way businesses operate. The PREVENT Waste Alliance and The Incubation Network have launched The SUP Challenge to collaborate with Entrepreneur Support Organisations (ESOs) in South and Southeast Asia to source, support and scale high-potential start-ups tackling single-use plastics in the food and beverage sector. Selected ESOs will gain access to mentorship and technical assistance, as well as funding from a pool of US$500,000. The application deadline was 01 March 2022.

You can find an overview of the selected ESOs in this Cohort Booklet.

Start-ups can now apply here to the programmes of the selected ESOs.
