Whereabouts unknown – plastic tracing technologies for circularity

Plastic materials often move through complex global value chains, making it difficult to track their composition, origin, and end-of-life pathways. Limited transparency can hinder effective recycling, reduce material value, and complicate efforts to build a circular economy for plastics.

This webinar introduces a new publication authored by Wuppertal Institute GIZ which explores how plastic traceability can improve transparency along plastic value chains and support higher recycling rates. Presented by two of the authors, it offers a systematic overview of current and emerging tracing technologies – such as digital product passports and physical tracers – and discusses their implications, particularly for stakeholders in the Global South.

Speakers:

  • Henning Wilts (Wuppertal Institute)
  • Holger Berg (Wuppertal Institute)
  • Filiz Jaetzold (GIZ)
