Methane is responsible for around one-third of the global warming experienced today. At the same time, urban and peri-urban organic residues account for approximately 20% of global anthropogenic methane emissions. Yet these residues are not only a climate challenge: they are also a valuable source of biogenic carbon, nutrients, energy and materials.
In this webinar, GIZ and the German Environment Agency (UBA) will launch their joint Think Piece “Turning a Global Warming Threat into a Resource for Life: Re-thinking Methane Mitigation and Organic Residues.” The event is hosted by the PREVENT Waste Alliance, of which both GIZ and UBA are members.
The Think Piece makes the case for moving beyond a predominantly linear approach to organic waste management and towards a resource-centric, circular system. Instead of allowing organic residues to end up in dumpsites and landfills, they can be prevented, recovered and returned to productive use – for example through compost, digestate, bioenergy or bio-based materials. Such approaches can simultaneously reduce methane emissions, restore nutrient and carbon cycles, strengthen soil health and food security, and create new economic opportunities.
The publication highlights four central areas for action:
- Treat organic residues as a circular commodity and return valuable carbon and nutrients to soils and agricultural systems.
- Mobilise finance for circular organic waste solutions through enabling policy frameworks, innovative financing instruments and viable business models.
- Act across sectors and levels of government to better connect waste, agriculture, food, energy and climate policies.
- Invest in green skills and strengthen the capacities needed to implement circular organic residue management at scale.
Drawing on practical examples from Germany, Serbia, India, Ghana and the PREVENT Waste Alliance, the Think Piece demonstrates how policy, finance, technology and cross-sector collaboration can help transform organic residues from a source of methane emissions into a resource for climate action and sustainable development.
During the webinar, the authors will present the key findings and recommendations of the Think Piece and discuss their implications with participants. The session will also provide an opportunity to exchange on how these approaches can be translated into policy and practice in different country contexts.
