Frass Recirculation in Black Soldier Fly Production – Closing Nutrient Loops in Practice | A BSF Community of Practice Practitioner Webinar

In this webinar, Dr Ivã Lopes from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) will present the latest findings on frass recirculation in Black Soldier Fly (BSF) production.

The presentation will explore how frass generated during BSF production can be reintroduced into the larvae’s diet, potentially reducing the need for fresh substrate and drying agents while maintaining larval growth and overall yield.

Drawing on different experimental and real-production settings, Ivã will share findings on:

  • the effects of frass recirculation on larval growth, bioconversion efficiency and material reduction;
  • the importance of substrate depth and the nutritional quality of the original feedstock;
  • continuous frass recirculation at a 15% inclusion rate under production conditions;
  • the agronomic potential of recirculated frass, including trials with pak choi and tomato;
  • the potential of frass and chitin to replace mineral fertilisers; and
  • changes in microbial abundance, diversity, stability and maturity of the resulting frass.

The presentation will be followed by an open discussion and Q&A with researchers and BSF practitioners, providing space to exchange practical experiences and discuss the implications for closing nutrient loops within BSF-based circular systems.
