The PREVENT Waste Alliance came together virtually for its first general assembly. In addition to a thank you video message from the German Development Minister Gerd Müller (BMZ), the focus was on the communication of the pilot projects, which will now be implemented until June 2022.

The toolbox on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for packaging has been finalised and we are pleased to announce that the material of the toolbox is now available for download. The EPR Toolbox contains various training materials which, among other things, explain how an EPR system can be established, what possible financing mechanisms exist and how the informal sector can be involved in a sustainable waste management as well.

Within the working groups “Conserving resources” the Wuppertal Institute, with the support of the members of working groups “Conserving resources” and “Closing loops for packaging”, developed the study “Prevention of plastic waste in production and consumption by multi-actor partnerships”.

One year ago, the German Development Minister Dr. Gerd Müller launched the PREVENT Waste Alliance. Even though the general assembly cannot take place as originally planned, we do not want to let our one year anniversary pass by unnoticed.

As final step of the creation of a Toolbox on extended producer responsibility (EPR) for packaging waste, a consolidation workshop was held virtually on 7 May 2020. Around 60 PREVENT members took the chance to discuss and share their expertise on this topic after the materials, as well as the feedback received from partner countries had been presented. Furthermore, the participants identified potential application options for the knowledge tool.

The members of the PREVENT steering committee met for the first time on 28 January. In an open exchange, the actors got to know each other and discussed the structure, design and strategic orientation of PREVENT. They are now optimistic about the joint plans for 2020.

As part of the Global Social Business Summit, we met with stakeholders from the microfinance and social corporate world. Together with the Yunus Environment Hub, we organized this exchange in workshop format, bringing together around 100 participants to the first Social Business Environment Forum.

The K trade fair in Düsseldorf is considered the world’s leading trade fair for plastics and took place from 19 to 23 of October this year. K recorded 225,000 visitors during its eight show days and offered a platform to around 3,300 exhibitors to present their products and services. This year a special focus was given to “Circular Economy – Plastics shape the future”. A good reason for us to be there!

Minister Müller of the Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has officially launched the PREVENT Waste Alliance together with the Indonesian Ambassador and over 30 organizations in Berlin on 9 May 2019. The Alliance is part of the Action Program on Circular Economy of the German Development Cooperation.
