Hessisches Ministerium für Umwelt, Klimaschutz, Landwirtschaft und Verbraucherschutz

In the Federal State of Hesse, the Ministry is responsible for waste management, biological diversity, water and soil, the protection of natural resources and immission and radiation protection in addition to the fields of action mentioned in its name. In the seventies of the last century, the original task of the Ministry changed from creating the basis for supplying the Hessian population with food to safeguarding environmental concerns and environmental protection. The Hessian Ministry for the Environment, Climate Protection, Agriculture and Consumer Protection is a supreme administrative authority with around 470 employees. The regional councils in Darmstadt, Gießen and Kassel, some state enterprises as well as the districts as lower authorities take over execution tasks from the environment department. A total of 3700 employees work in the subordinate areas of the ministry.

In the current 20th legislative period (2019 to 2024), the topic of plastics and prevention of plastics will play a key role for the Hessian state government under the umbrella of the Hessian resource conservation strategy. It will use all available means to reduce the consumption of plastics.

Since waste does not stop at national borders, it is a matter of concern to the state government in Hesse to make its contribution across its own national borders.

As first federal state Hessen would like to take the opportunity within the various bouquet of private waste initiatives to support the International Waste Alliance of the Federal Ministry to the best of its ability.

The conversion of waste into a resource is an important condition for the transition to a more closed-loop economy and consequently a more environmentally friendly way of life and economy.

The process of closing material loops initiated at European and national level has been pursued for years in Hessen and strengthens the role of the waste management industry towards a supply-oriented raw materials industry.

It is important to the state government in Hessen to introduce and ensure a consistent circular flow system for the careful use of natural resources.
