German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development – BMZ

A life of freedom, dignity and safety for all humans without poverty, fear or ecological destruction – the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) stands for these goals and is committed to implementing them. With Agenda 2030, the German Development Cooperation is striving, among other things, to achieve environmentally sound, comprehensive waste management. Waste volumes should be significantly reduced through avoidance, reuse and recycling. The BMZ is supporting partner institutions in developing strategies and legal regulations as well as setting up corresponding structures. It is also supporting the ongoing and further education of technical and management staff. It is providing financial support for the development of recycling and disposal plants.

As initiators of the PREVENT Waste Alliance, we wish to promote a dialogue between the different stakeholders from the state, civil society, science and business – and this should take place at a national level, in our partner countries and on an international basis. That’s because it is only through collaboration and exchange that innovative solutions can be developed, voluntary agreements can be negotiated and regulations can be effectively implemented.

In many countries the BMZ is supporting a functional waste industry and circular economy. In addition to the classic set-up and development of communal disposal systems and the introduction of recycling technologies, the collaboration with partner countries also focuses more intensely on establishing cyclical approaches to consumption, production and trade in order to minimise the use of raw materials.
Accordingly, in 2018 the BMZ developed the “Action Programme for the Circular Economy” and defined priority measures in the following fields:
• A waste-free, healthy environment for people thanks to effective services
• Safe jobs with humane working conditions
• Sustainable production and recycling of waste as a raw material
• Climate protection by avoiding and recycling waste
• Avoidance of marine litter to protect biodiversity
