How can digital innovation and community action accelerate the transition to a circular economy?
Building a circular economy requires more than improved infrastructure – it depends on Empowered Communities, Digital Innovation and Effective Local Governance. This WCEF2026 Accelerator Session showcases practical solutions from India that demonstrate how people-centred approaches and digital governance can transform waste into valuable resources.
The session will feature inspiring examples from across India, including Port Blair, where more than 7,500 citizens contributed to tackling marine plastic pollution through behaviour change, clean-up drives and improved waste management.
Participants will also discover Coimbatore’s Urban Lab and its Digital Circular Economy Toolkit, which enables real-time waste tracking, citizen participation and data-driven municipal planning.
The discussion will further explore how Kerala’s K-SMART and Haritha Mithram platforms strengthen waste collection, traceability and citizen engagement, alongside Green Aadhaar, which connects waste generators, recyclers and waste management companies, and the Malba Portal, which supports Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) implementation and resource recovery for construction and demolition waste.
Together, these examples illustrate how digital governance can strengthen local institutions, create green livelihoods and support inclusive circular economy transitions.
Participants can look forward to practical case studies, interactive discussions and opportunities to exchange experiences on scaling digital solutions that improve transparency, accountability and circular economy outcomes. The session will highlight approaches that can be replicated and adapted across cities throughout the Global South.
The session is organised by GIZ India on behalf of the Topics of Common Interest (TOCI) Circular Economy initiative of the organisation in collaboration with Prevent members, state and municipal corporations partners from Port Blair, Coimbatore, Kochi.
